FIELD GUIDE
The Next One
— Already Forming —
— THE FRAMEWORK —

Same framework. Different lens.

The Complete Trader’s Edge taught the framework. Market Mayhem applies it backwards — through four centuries of disasters that all followed the same blueprint.

Mind. Method. Money. The same three pillars that build a profitable trader are the three pillars that explain every crash in history. When mind breaks, method follows. When method breaks, money is gone.

Read this book and you stop seeing isolated incidents. You start seeing the pattern.

I

Mind

Greed, fear, the herd, the comforting story — every bubble is a psychology problem first.
II

Method

The mechanism — leverage, structure, the financial innovation that “this time” supposedly justifies.
III

Money

Position sizing, drawdown, ruin. When the unwind comes, only money rules survive.
— WHO IT’S FOR —

If you’ve ever bought at the top — this book is for you.

i.

The Active Trader

You’ve felt the pull of a parabolic move. You’ve sized up “just this once.” You want to recognize the pattern in your own behaviour before the market teaches you the hard way.

ii.

The Curious Historian

You read about Tulip Mania once and dismissed it as quaint. This book will show you why it’s the most contemporary story you’ve ever read.

iii.

Anyone With a Portfolio

Crypto, stocks, real estate, your retirement account. The next bubble will not announce itself. It will look like an opportunity. It always does.

A Tuesday morning is coming. It is coming for all of us. It is coming for you.

— ABOUT THE AUTHOR —

Louw van Riet

Author of The Complete Trader’s Edge, host of the Greatest Traders and Market Mayhem podcasts, and a trader of equities, gold, and futures.

Writing from the trenches of South Africa’s small but brutal trading scene, Louw built the Mind · Method · Money framework over 15 years of staring at charts, blowing up accounts, and reluctantly figuring out what actually works. Market Mayhem is his second book.

— QUESTIONS —

Before you buy.

Do I need to read The Complete Trader’s Edge first?
No. Market Mayhem stands completely on its own. It uses the Mind · Method · Money framework as a lens, but every chapter is a self-contained story. Reading the first book deepens your understanding of why the pattern repeats — but it isn’t required to enjoy the disasters.
Is this a trading book or a history book?
Both, and that’s the whole point. It reads like history — vivid, narrative, set in actual streets and trading floors — but every chapter ends by handing you the takeaway: what to look for, what the pattern smells like, and how the same setup is forming somewhere right now.
What reading order should I use?
Read it in order the first time. Chapters I-III set up the framework, then IV-XXI walk you through 18 disasters chronologically, and chapter XXII is the field guide for spotting the next one. After that, jump anywhere — each historical chapter works standalone.
What formats are available?
Two editions, both live on Amazon. Kindle at $9.99 for instant worldwide download, and the black-and-white paperback at $24.99 — printed on premium cream paper, 6×9, ships internationally via Amazon’s print-on-demand network. No colour edition is planned.
Is there an audiobook?
Not yet. The companion podcast Market Mayhem covers the same material in a narrated, cinematic format — it’s effectively the audio version, but episode-based rather than read-aloud. An official audiobook may follow in 2026.
How long is the book?
Approximately 120,000 words across 22 chapters — long enough to do justice to four centuries of disasters, but not so long that any single chapter overstays its welcome. Average chapter is 5,000 words. Most readers finish a chapter in one sitting.
Will reading this make me a better trader?
It will make you a more cautious trader, which is often the same thing. You’ll recognize parabolic moves earlier. You’ll question consensus more aggressively. You’ll size positions more soberly. The book won’t hand you a system — it’ll hand you a pattern that, once seen, cannot be unseen.

You will see it before it arrives.
